  2. This is the qwertz Format README File.  Format is an SGML to LaTeX
  3. translator.  It consists of
  4.  
  5. 1) SGML document type definitions (DTDs) for the LaTeX document styles
  6. (articles, books, reports, letters, slides), for BibTeX bibliographies
  7. and for Unix manual pages.  (The main DTD is called "qwertz", which is
  8. also the name of our AI planning project for which the system was
  9. developed.)

  11. 2) Programs for translating SGML documents of the these types into
  12. LaTeX and groff.
  13.  
  14. 3) A command for extracting source code from documentation, which is
  15. useful for a simple kind of "literate programming".
  16.  
  17. Format allows LaTeX documents to be created using powerful and
  18. comfortable SGML editors, such as Author/Editor, in a quasi WYSIWYG
  19. manner.  It also provides a layer of abstraction from LaTeX, allowing
  20. documents to be more easily translated into formats for other document
  21. processing systems, such as nroff/troff or MS-WORD.

  23. Format is availably by anonymous ftp from ftp.gmd.de.  It is in the
  24. gmd/sgml directory.  The latest version is in the file named, take a
  25. deep breath: sgml2latex-format.1.2.tar.Z
  26.  
  27. Read the INSTALL file in the format directory for information about
  28. installing the system.  A postscript version of the users manual is in
  29. format/doc/manual.ps .  The manual pages are in format/man.
